In this milestone year marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing, the Ito Takao Laboratory Faculty of Art and Design Department of Social Design of Arts, has launched the "PIECE of PEACE" project, which aims to raise awareness of peace by creating various products based on the atomic bomb-damaged trees scattered around Nagasaki City that survived despite being damaged by the atomic bomb.
This project is based on the theme of experiencing peace with all five senses through "a-bombed trees." As part of this project, sound designer Shinya Kiyokawa, who supported the project, recorded the sounds transmitted through the trunks of the trees, the rustling of the leaves, and the environmental sounds around the trees. Based on this, we combined the sound produced by Shinya Kiyokawa with footage of the trees and Nagasaki scenery shot by Rei Matsuo (Fukusho High School), a fourth-year student in the Department of Department of Fine Arts and Media Sciences to create a three-minute project video. The video was released on August 9th, the day Nagasaki Prefecture was hit by the atomic bomb.
"I hope that by listening to the sounds of the trees that survived the blast and heat rays of the atomic bomb, and that have continued to put down roots and produce leaves in the same place for 80 years, as the 'Voices of A-bombed Trees,' each person will have an opportunity to think about peace," says Professor Ito.
