The workshop ishosted by the Kyushu Branch Kita-Fukuoka Chapter of the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA), and this year marks its 27th year. The title of the assignment was "TIME SCAPE." The site was the historic Moji Central Market, and we were asked to propose an architecture that would connect the history of the store during its heyday with its future.
ABC architecture dojo Join Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering Department of Architecture The 13 students, from first to third year, began working on the project during the summer vacation, and even after the start of the third quarter, stayed at the university every day to work on it. The students focused on the two-meter-wide passageway and the interactions that still exist among local residents. They inverted the passageway and the shopping streets on both sides, preserving the structure of the current market, while relocating existing stores to a two-meter width and creating buffer spaces on both sides that function as passageways and separate from the surrounding buildings, creating room for new stores and other functions.
The judges praised our university's proposal for maintaining the layout of the existing shopping district while also creating an appealing environment for the surrounding area, and itwas awarded the grand prize.
The students were exhausted from the constant preparations that had been going on day after day, but the moment they received their awards, their expressions lit up with a sense of fulfillment, and this experience gave them great confidence.
