architectural design competition
What is Department of Architecture?
We pursue architecture that provides answers to the challenges posed by society.

Architecture has protected and supported people's lives throughout the ages. In Department of Architecture, we study traditional homes, explore the nature of "living" in an aging society, pursue disaster-resistant architecture through damage surveys of the Kumamoto earthquake, and explore spaces that feel psychologically cool to reduce global warming. We are researching "architecture" to solve various problems facing society. In addition to this research, we are also actively contributing to the local community, such as actually designing a meeting hall that will serve as a place of relaxation in the temporary housing complex for those affected by the Kumamoto earthquake. In addition, the design projects of our students are highly praised every year at national-level competitions.

Characteristics of the Department
01Kyushu 's best practical architectural education
This is Kyushu's leading practical architectural education facility, where students can comprehensively learn about the three fields of "planning and history," "environment and facilities," and "structure and production." We have a high employment rate and track record in the construction industry.

02From Kyushu to the world, global architectural talent
We have set up courses that teach English expressions for specialized knowledge. We also conduct exchange activities with universities overseas. We are cultivating global architectural talent that can be used internationally.

03Turn the fundamentals you learn at university into practical skills outside of school
In addition to class assignments and other regular curricular activities, students are learning practical architectural design methods outside of school by participating in workshops both in Japan and overseas, and providing support through architecture in disaster-stricken areas.

Understanding the essence of steel structure from a historical perspective,
Learn about the evolution of technology
鉄骨構造 | 姜 優子 教授

30-40% of buildings in Japan are made of steel structures. It has been 100 years since steel-framed buildings began to be constructed, and technology such as the development of new steel materials and structural systems is advancing every day. For students of architecture, steel structure is one of the basic subjects along with "reinforced concrete structure" and "wooden structure," and it is also a subject that is easy to understand the connection with "structural mechanics." In order to understand the essence of the principles and theories that form the basis of design, we will learn as clearly as possible, looking back on history, and learning about the latest materials, construction methods, and analysis methods, including exercises.
Advanced technologies that emerged from the mid-18th century to the 20th century
Focus on architectural features
History of Modern Architecture | Professor Hideo Tomita

Starting with an empty house,
A new chapter in community service

Our laboratory tackles social issues through the "renovation and utilization of vacant houses." We study the impact of architecture on local communities, focusing on various buildings such as shared houses, guest houses, and welfare facilities. Our research is based on fieldwork, and also utilizes GIS and statistical analysis. We aim to contribute to the community through practical learning.
We are exploring ways to renovate vacant houses and bring new value to society. We learn about the impact of architecture on local communities through field surveys and analysis. If you are interested in contributing to society and looking for practical learning, please come to our lab.

Yuko Kuma Seminar
Is that house really comfortable?
Try it, measure it and decide for yourself!

We live in an age where a "home that is warm in winter and cool in summer" is the norm. In this seminar, we will further incorporate natural energy to realize a living environment that is highly comfortable and energy-efficient. We will acquire high-level skills and expertise while learning and thinking on our own about how architecture is related to social issues such as the SDGs and decarbonization.
I am involved in the development of central air conditioning systems and am conducting research into residential comfort and energy conservation. The appeal of this laboratory is that you can see, touch, and learn in depth about homes that actually have the systems installed!
