On Tuesday, July 15th, the university held its 72nd kiln opening at its Kakiemon-style kiln *, and approximately 500 works by students from Department of Living Environment Design Faculty of Art and Design and Kyushu Sangyo University, Zokei Junior College of Art and Design were removed from the kiln.
Under the guidance of Professor Seiji Takamori of the Department Department of Living Environment Design Faculty of Art and Design, students took turns burning firewood overnight from Wednesday, July 9th to Thursday, July 10th, and the kiln reached a maximum temperature of 1,200 degrees. Five days after the firing, the students carefully removed each piece, such as a large plate or teacup, from the kiln, which was still hot, and checked the finished product.
This time, works by local people who participated in the open pottery experience class held at our university on Sunday, June 1st were also on display.
Momoko Yamashita, a fourth-year student in the Department Department of Living Environment Design Faculty of Art and Design, reflected on the kiln opening, saying, "When working in a Kakiemon-style kiln, the ash and smoke produce unexpected colors, and once again, the finished work has a subdued, natural feel. Pottery is a field in which it is easy to create what you have in mind, but sometimes the times when things don't go well are the key to success. I am very happy to be able to work together with my fellow pottery majors, competing with each other."
Our university offers open lectures throughout the year for a wide range of age groups, from children to the elderly, in order to give back to society the intellectual property gained from the university's education and research. Anyone can participate, so please feel free to apply.
*The Kakiemon-style kiln on our university campus was built in October 2000 by the late Sakaida Kakiemon XIV, a professor at our university's Graduate Graduate School of Fine Arts with the hope that "young people with aspirations to become artists would be able to experience firsthand the profound depth of traditional craftsmanship." Designed in accordance with the secret Kakiemon-style kiln, it combines the functions of both a climbing kiln and a single kiln, and is the only Kakiemon kiln on our campus other than the other Kakiemon kilns in Arita Town, Nishimatsuura District, Saga Prefecture.
