[Traditional and contemporary art] "Yame lanterns" designed by students from Faculty of Art and Design brighten up autumn nights

On Saturday, November 22nd, an art group called "Ato: Art & Design," comprised of Department of Visual Design in Faculty of Art and Design, held an exhibition of original lanterns and a mini-lantern making workshop at the "Magic Lantern Night - An Autumn Evening Wrapped in the Light of Yame Lanterns" event, sponsored by the Yame Lantern Cooperative Association, held at Myoei-ji Temple (Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture).

The venue was decorated with 30 lanterns designed by faculty and students. These works, which incorporate the perspective of modern art into the traditional Yame lantern craft, cast a soft light on the temple grounds.

In addition, in the mini lantern making workshop, participants tried their hand at painting and creating collages using colored washi paper. With the support of the students, participants were able to experience lighting a one-of-a-kind light, giving them a chance to feel closer to traditional crafts.

Some of the original lanterns that were exhibited on the day are on display for a limited time at the Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel (Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City). Please come and visit.
