Faculty of Art and Design Associate Professor Hato receives Honorable Mention at the international photography award "IPA 2025"

Associate Professor Hiromi HataFaculty of Art and Design Department of Fine Arts and Media Sciences Arts, has received an Honorable Mention at the International Photography Awards (IPA) 2025, an international photography award sponsored by the Lucy Foundation, for his work "Nonexistent Portrait," created using image generation AI.

The IPA is known as the "Academy Awards of the photography world" and is a prestigious international competition that receives over 14,000 entries from over 120 countries around the world.

The winning work, "Nonexistent Portrait," is a series of eight portraits of women wearing fantastical and original costumes of insects and plants, created using image-generating AI technology. Each photograph was repeatedly revised using 50 to 100 detailed instructions, including the type of camera lens, shooting settings, costume material, and the person's facial expression.

This work also won a Bronze Award at the 2023 Tokyo International Foto Awards (TIFA), once again highlighting Associate Professor Hata's cutting-edge expressiveness on the international stage.

Associate Professor Hata expressed his enthusiasm for his future creative activities, saying, "For the past few years, I have been creating portrait photographs using AI, and I am currently working on creating AI videos as well. In the future, I plan to expand into video as well."
