From Tuesday, January 20th to Thursday, January 22nd, 11 students from the Master's Program in the Graduate Graduate School of Fine Arts at our university received instruction in traditional Kakiemon style painting techniques from visiting professor Sakaida Kakiemon XV in the class "Special Exercise in Creative Expression (Kakiemon Style)."
On the last day of class, the students visited Arita Town in Saga Prefecture, where they learned about the history and production background of Arita ware. Starting from Izumiyama, they visited the Arita Town History and Folklore Museum and the Saga Prefectural Kyushu Ceramic Museum, systematically learning about the establishment and development of Arita ware. At Arita Sera, they viewed works from the Arita ware brand "2016/".
At Kakiemon Kiln, the participants were able to see the artists' studio, the workshop, and the kiln under construction. Experiencing the production site up close provided an opportunity to deepen their understanding not only of techniques, but also of the division of labor and materials.
This seminar has been held continuously since its inception in 2012, with the aim of passing on the techniques and principles of the Kakiemon style to the next generation.
Our university is home to a Kakiemon-style kiln, which was established on campus in 2000 thanks to the efforts of the late Professor Sakaida Kakiemon XIV, a Living National Treasure. In 2004, the Kakiemon Style Ceramic Art Research Center was established, which has since developed as a base for research and education on the Kakiemon style. In 2017, a Regional Industry Research Department was added and the center was reorganized into the Future Tradition Research Center.
