From January to February, we conducted a "pre-enrollment education program" for approximately 150 third-year students from Kyushu Sangyo University Kyushu High School and Kyushu Sangyo University Kyushu High School who are planning to enroll at our university.
This program is a collaboration between the Yomiuri Shimbun Western Headquarters and our university's Center for Fundamental Education, and is an initiative to support prospective students in making a smooth transition to university studies. Students read the newspaper every day and use communication tools to post summaries and their thoughts on articles that interest them. They also exchange opinions with our students and faculty.
At the first session, a lecturer from the company's "Power of Newspapers" committee gave a lecture on how to read newspapers and how to find articles that interest you, and Professor Seiko Mori from Center for Fundamental Education explained how to approach the topic. At the second session, Professor Hiroyasu Yamamoto gave a lecture on writing skills training at the level required for university students.
The final course, held on Thursday, February 19th, featured a workshop called "Student Journalist Experience" led by a lecturer from the committee. The students were divided into groups and, based on a fictitious case outline provided, each group discussed what questions they should ask to elicit detailed information, then experienced a mock press conference.
In the second half, Associate Professor Nakaseko Takahiko reviewed the program and gave a detailed explanation of communication methods and the mindset needed for university classes.
