Cybercrime Prevention Volunteer Study Session Held — Visited by Fukuoka Prefectural Police and the National Police Agency

On Wednesday, November 26th, third and fourth year students from Professor Shunichi Ishida 's laboratory in Department of Information Science of Science and Faculty of Science and Engineering, held a study session on cybercrime prevention volunteer activities. The laboratory works in collaboration with the Fukuoka Prefectural Police Headquarters and operates as "KSU Cyber Patrollers." On the day of the session, members of the Cybercrime Division of the Fukuoka Prefectural Police Headquarters as well as the Cyber Police Bureau of the National Police Agency came to observe the session.

At the study session, the students considered the theme for the "Cybercrime Volunteer Public Relations and Awareness Contest," based on the "Cybercrime Volunteer" initiative promoted by the National Police Agency. The fourth-year students split into two groups and, in preparation for creating their videos, studied the themes of the videos, "phishing scams" and "efforts to prevent cyber attackers," and explained them to the third-year students. They then held a discussion with the third-year students to consider the proposed themes.

After careful consideration, we decided on "Don't let your child intentionally become a cyber attacker," which is aimed at junior high school students. We will now work out the specific structure and direction of the 30-second video.

Afterwards, an exchange of opinions was held between the National Police Agency and the Fukuoka Prefectural Police Headquarters, where reports were given on the current situation in which huge amounts of damage have recently been caused by voice phishing, the efforts of cybercrime volunteers, and daily crime prevention activities.

The students said, "I was able to work on this project while also gaining experience in my field of expertise, which served as a form of self-development. It was an opportunity to raise my awareness, expand my knowledge, and reaffirm it. While I learned the importance of communicating clearly with family and friends, I also felt the difficulty of increasing the number of volunteer members."

The department will continue to actively support such efforts through laboratory activities in information security classes.
