On Saturday, July 12, Faculty of Science and Engineering held a COIL class * with Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in the Philippines, an international exchange partner institution, with approximately 150 participants.
In this class, 12 second-year students and graduate students from Faculty of Science and Engineering taking AI programming seminars gave presentations in English about the programs they had developed. The presentations were attended by approximately 60 faculty and students from MSU-IIT, as well as many students, faculty, and staff from our university.
The participants showed off their creative ideas based on themes that interested them, such as a demonstration of using AI to recognize hand movements in place of a mouse and change slides with hand gestures, an initiative using AI to help tourists sort their beverage waste, and even a system that recognizes emotions from facial expressions via a monitor.
Students from MSU-IIT also submitted technical questions via online chat, such as those about camera recognition technology and coordinate settings, and the students answered them carefully, including their outlook for the future.
One of the presenters, Ten Nakamura from the Department of Department of Mechanical Engineering Yu(Fukuoka Technical High School) said, "I learned about this presentation opportunity while taking the AI Programming Seminar. Robot Workshop "I adapted the tomato harvesting robot contest I worked on in the program and created a program for a robot equipped with machine learning color recognition. Then, in preparation for my presentation in English, I used AI to create a manuscript, which I finalized under the guidance of professors in the department and native English instructors at Language Education and Research Center. After the presentation, I received questions and advice from MSU-IIT, which allowed me to gain new knowledge that I had not anticipated, and I hope to use it in my future activities," he said.
During the Q&A session in English, I received advice and support from a senior who had presentation experience.
Starting in 2022, Faculty of Science and Engineering will introduce COIL-style classes that emphasize specialization, where students will present their learning and research results internationally through AI and applications. We plan to continue expanding these classes in the future, with the aim of cultivating students' international perspectives and technological application skills.
*COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is an educational method in which students collaborate online with overseas universities and students, with the aim of broadening their international perspective.
