From March 9th (Monday) to 13th (Friday), the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) General Conference was held at our university. This conference is the largest academic meeting in Japan in the fields of science and engineering, and during the conference, approximately 4,000 people from all over the country participated, engaging in lively discussions and exchanges among researchers and students.
At this year's conference, more than 60 students from our university provided extensive support as conference staff. Tsubasa Horimi (Kita-Chiku High School), a second-year master's student in the Graduate School of Information Science, served as the coordinator for the student part-timers. He was in charge of managing student shifts and coordinating communication to ensure the smooth running of the conference. "Undergraduate students were in charge of venue staff, and graduate students were in charge of venue management, and they worked together to handle the situation. There were some issues, such as online sessions not running smoothly and presenters in classrooms having trouble operating the control consoles on the stage, but we used online chat among the staff to share information in real time and strived to respond quickly," he recalls.
Furthermore, the campus tour guided many guests to various facilities on campus over the four days. The tour included cross-disciplinary content that highlighted the unique characteristics of the university, such as an introduction to the results of the local 5G joint experiment being conducted by the university with QTnet Corporation, a tour of the sports science laboratory in Okusu Arena 2020, and a visit to the XR-based studio in Faculty of Art and Design.
Takumi Otani (Kaho High School), a fourth-year student in Department of Information Science Faculty of Science and Engineering, who served as the tour guide, commented, "It was challenging to manage the time while guiding the participants, but it was also a good opportunity for me to learn about the facilities of other faculties."
At our university, we promote opportunities for students to gain practical experience by participating in the operation of academic conferences like this one, and to interact with people from outside the university.
