[Faculty of International Studies of Culture Advanced Program] Special lecture by Toshiaki Inada

 

December 11th (Thursday), Faculty of International Studies of Culture teeth Advanced Program As part of the Educational Leadership Academy, a program to develop future English teachers, a special lecture was held by Professor Toshiaki Inada, Emeritus Professor at Kyushu University, who specializes in linguistics.
The lecture, which had the theme of "Insights from language research useful for English education," was attended by 51 students from Faculty of International Studies of Culture.

The lecture began with a discussion of how to study English using quotes from linguists, and included various examples of grammatical differences between Japanese and English, implied meanings that are based on a common understanding between speaker and listener, and learning methods using generative AI and points to note when using it.
Students also participated in group work to think about the situations in which the example sentences are used, and were seen actively exchanging opinions.
Mr. Inada said, "In addition to having a clear sense of purpose for studying English, it is important to increase opportunities to use English outside of class. I also hope that students aspiring to become teachers will become teachers who do not judge their students' efforts solely on results, but also fully recognize the process of their efforts."

Hana Yoshida (Minamichiku High School), a third-year student Department of International Studies of Culture who attended the lecture, said, "I was particularly impressed by the content on language recognition mechanisms and the workings of generative AI. It reminded me of the indirect expression culture that is deeply rooted in Japan, and I was reminded that language deeply reflects the culture behind it. I also felt that I needed to look at the understanding process of the chunks * that I am researching from a more multifaceted perspective, and it was a good opportunity for me to reconsider the direction of my research."
