Kyushu Sangyo University x Suzukake x Hotel Okura Fukuoka "Dressing up Japanese sweets"

From Friday, February 6th to Friday, February 13th, students from our university's Faculty of Art and Design are holding an exhibition entitled "Dressing Up Japanese Sweets" in the lobby on the first floor of Hotel Okura Fukuoka (Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City) to showcase the appeal of 12 original Japanese sweets from Suzukake, a long-established Japanese sweets shop in Hakata (Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City).

After experiencing making Japanese sweets at Suzukake, 11 students studying ceramics in Department of Living Environment Design created original tableware, imagining shapes and colors that would suit the sweets. The wrapping paper used to wrap the sweets was selected by Suzukake President Nakaoka, and the works were created by 10 students studying Japanese painting, incorporating the thoughts and seasonal feel of the pieces, and are exhibited alongside the tableware. In addition, 12 students majoring in spatial design created and staged the display fixtures, based on the theme of "simple beauty."

In addition, the exhibition also features reproductions of works by Sakaida Kakiemon XV, a visiting professor at our university, using molds that have been handed down through generations since the Edo period.

The Japanese sweets on display were specially selected by Suzukake for this exhibition to create a synergistic effect with the tableware baked by students at our university. This joint project, now in its fourth year, is being held in cooperation with Hotel Okura Fukuoka, providing an opportunity for the many domestic and international tourists who stay at the hotel to experience the traditional culture of Hakata.
