Hoshino Laboratory × Fukuoka District Waterworks Corporation: Japan's first practical application of osmotic power generation

On Tuesday, August 5th, the Umi-no-Nakamichi Nata Seawater Desalination Center "Mamizu Pia," operated by the Fukuoka District Waterworks Authority, held Japan's first "Osmotic Power Generation Facility Operation Start Ceremony." At the ceremony, a promotional video produced in collaboration with Faculty of Art and Design of Photography and Visual Media,Professor Koji Hoshino's laboratory, and the Fukuoka District Waterworks Authority was unveiled, providing guests with an easy-to-understand explanation of the mechanism and significance of osmotic power generation.

The lab began composing the story over the course of a year, and produced the video using a variety of expressive techniques that make use of the lab's expertise, including filming the exterior and facilities of Mamizu Pier, using 3DCG and 2D animation for the characters who provide explanations in the video, and adding audio and music.

Yuutaro Teranaka (Joto High School), a fourth-year student who directed the video, said, "I was in charge of overall command of the production team made up of seminar members, assigning tasks and editing and finishing the film. I struggled with progress management and making sure that the film was in line with the client's requests, but through hands-on production I was able to gain a broader perspective. The production period was long, and I was nervous when it was released, but the joy of achieving our goal as a team is a valuable experience that I can use in my future life as a working adult."

The completed video is approximately 5 minutes and 30 seconds long and visually conveys the technical background of osmotic power generation and its contribution to the environment.
