From Wednesday, June 24th to Saturday, June 27th, 36 students and 2 faculty members from Dongseo University in South Korea visited our university as part of the Faculty of Art and Design' international exchange program.
During their stay, various exchange activities took place, and on June 26th (Friday), the Seung-Hyuk Laboratory of Department of Visual Design conducted a "Global Design Workshop" in the Tsuyazaki area of Fukutsu City.
The students conducted fieldwork in Tsuyazaki, exploring the townscape and historical buildings including the former Tamanoi Ryokan, focusing on the vacant housing problem and regional revitalization issues common to both Japan and South Korea. Deepening their understanding of the region's culture and history, they considered the possibilities of utilizing local resources and urban development from perspectives such as "Are vacant houses a problem or a resource?" and "How can we pass on the memories and values remaining in buildings to the future?"
Furthermore, production programs such as lithography and textile design were also conducted, allowing students to express the insights and discoveries gained through fieldwork as designs. The students walked around the region, experiencing the culture, landscape, and daily lives of the people, deepening their interactions while sharing diverse values and perspectives.
Based on the insights and ideas gained from this workshop, we plan to develop this into an international collaborative research project in which Japanese and Korean students and faculty will work together to address the vacant housing problem from the perspectives of art and design.
Faculty of Art and Design at our university will continue to promote international educational and research activities that address regional issues from the perspective of art and design, through collaboration with partner universities overseas.
