On Sunday, October 26th, a workshop was held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening of Island City (Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City) and students enrolled in the "Tourism Region Promotion Project" led by Professor Nagamatsu Takefumi of the Department of TourismFaculty of Collaborative Regional Development participated and presented proposals for future city development.
At the commemorative ceremony held at Island City Central Park on the day, third-year student Fukuzono Fuune (Shimabara High School) made a presentation in front of about 160 people, including Fukuoka City Mayor Takashima, people involved in urban development, and local residents. Based on the theme of realizing a "circular" society of the future, she proposed "Kurukuru Market!", which aims to create a sustainable society through a flea market by using the three school districts of Island City as a "place for community interaction."
Additionally, at the ceremony venue, photo panels of Island City's highlights, taken and produced by students, were on display.
Fukuzono said, "We thought that by implementing a project that would encourage resource circulation and local interaction in Island City, which has a large family demographic, we could help create a sustainable future for Island City, so our team went through a lot of trial and error. Through this activity, we were able to really feel that we ourselves are responsible for the future society."
Through projects in this course, students will collaborate with local governments, such as Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, to make proposals aimed at resolving local issues.
