Connecting the charm of the region to the next generation: The 'OMAMORI PROJECT' is being implemented at Shikanoshima Elementary School.

From Thursday, September 3rd to Wednesday, September 9th, students from Kyushu Sangyo University and Kyushu Sangyo University, Zokei Junior College of Art and Design conducted lectures, hands-on programs, and a yarn spinning workshop at Shikanoshima Elementary School in Fukuoka City (Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City) as part of the "OMAMORI PROJECT," a community collaboration activity.

This project, which began last year, is an activity in which students learn about the history and culture of Shikanoshima Island, starting with the "Manyoshu poetry monument," and aim to promote its charm. This year, children who will be responsible for the future of the region are also participating in the production, and the project is working to pass on the charm and traditional culture of Shikanoshima Island to the next generation through the creation of amulets.

On Thursday the 3rd, Associate Professor Mari Tanaka (Center for Fundamental Education) and Associate Professor Shinya Morishita (Kyushu Sangyo University, Zokei Junior College of Art and Design), who are in charge of the project, visited the school and gave a lecture to 5th and 6th graders on the themes of the Manyoshu poetry monument on Shikanoshima Island and craftsmanship.

On the following day, Monday the 7th, students participated in a game themed around Manyoshu poetry monuments, which they had planned, further deepening their interaction. The participating children visited checkpoints set up on campus together with the students, and challenged themselves with quizzes about Manyoshu poetry monuments. They learned about the local history and culture while having fun in a stamp rally format.

On Wednesday the 9th, a "thread spinning workshop" was held to create the thread that will be used as material for this year's amulets. Students and children worked together to spin the thread by hand using spinning tops. The completed thread will be used as material for original amulets that will be given out at Shikaumi Shrine in conjunction with the "Shiosai Yoi Festival" held on Shikanoshima Island in November.

This series of activities provided students with a valuable opportunity to pass on what they learned in the community to the next generation and gave them a chance to re-examine the charm of the region.
