Associate Professor Hiromi Hata has been selected as a finalist for the international photography award, 'Xposure International Photography Awards'.

Associate Professor Hiromi Hataof Faculty of Art and Design Department of Fine Arts and Media Sciences Arts, has been selected as a finalist in the "Xposure International Photography Awards," an international photography award held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This award is an international photography award organized by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau of the UAE. This year, the award received a record number of entries from around the world, with over 29,000 submissions from more than 60 countries. From among these, Associate Professor Hata's work was selected as one of the 74 winning entries across all categories.

The award-winning AI portrait photograph, "Imaginary Portraits Of The Nonexistent," features a fictional female figure created by an image generation AI. The figure, clad in exaggerated, humorous attire, stands in quiet light with restrained gestures, gazing at the viewer. The artist meticulously designed photographic parameters such as lens characteristics, focal length, and f-stop to recreate the unique tactile feel and realism of photography. By depicting a non-existent figure with photographic texture, the artist explores the expression of "hybrid reality," where photography and imaginary imagery intersect.

Associate Professor Hata said, "I am deeply honored to have been selected as a finalist in this international photography award, which receives many entries from all over the world. In this work, I am attempting a new photographic expression where reality and imagination intersect by combining fictional figures created by generative AI with the unique reality and tactile qualities of photography. I view AI not merely as a production tool, but as a device that shakes up perception itself. I would like to continue to pursue the possibilities of expression expanded by AI from both research and production perspectives."

This artwork will also be exhibited at the "Faculty of Faculty of Art and Design Exhibition," which will be held at the university's art museum from Friday, March 13th.
